Dear
Mr. President
RE: Unions
It is a concern to many that you would
choose to hold such a staunch pro-union position, as evidenced by your policy
position, most especially during such tough economic times of high unemployment
coupled with an increasing lack of national competitiveness.
Labour unions are essentially government
sanctioned forces effective in securing wages and benefits for a select few
while operating in contravention to normal free market fundamentals. Unions
frequently boast of being responsible for creating the middle class but what
they fail to acknowledge is that their gains are attained, for the most part,
at the expense of non-unionized workers who are the primary consumers of those goods
and services which are produced by unionized workers at artificially inflated
costs.
The recent auto bailout became a
necessity largely due to the auto unions having effectively destroyed the
competitiveness of the car manufacturers resulting in shareholders, customers,
taxpayers, and employees all being the ultimate losers.
Self-serving unions do little to enhance
productivity, performance, wealth generation, or global competitiveness on a
national level over the long term. It may seem politically expedient to support
unions but it won't serve the long term overall interests of the nation.
The President of the United States
should be an advocate for all workers, not just unionized workers.
Thank you very much for your
consideration.
Yours truly
Randall F. More, P. Eng.
