ATTENTION: Commissioners – Members of the Board of Education

c/o Ms. Esther V. Casco, Executive Assistant to the Board of Education

(email: cascoe@sfusd.edu)

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE to EACH COMMISSIONER

Your Board has reportedly chosen to rename the “Abraham Lincoln High School” apparently due to President Lincoln’s or his administration’s treatment of Native Americans 160 years ago.

We don’t know the reason for the apparently poor treatment of Native Americans but, is it possible, if you knew that Abraham’s grandfather had been murdered by members of the Shawnee Tribe, leaving Abraham’s father, Thomas, as a six-year-old fatherless boy, that you might have extended more understanding, compassion, and grace regarding Lincoln’s legacy?

Lincoln is considered by many to be amongst the finest Presidents in American history. Wouldn’t it be far better to honor Abraham Lincoln for his selfless contribution to the growing nation, as imperfect as he was, instead of denigrating him by attempting to erase his history and his tremendous contribution? All that we know for sure is that Lincoln was just like the rest of us, far from perfect.

Reportedly, your organization is also considering negating the name of any school, institution, monument, or statue named in honor of Presidents Washington or Jefferson… and other notables. Each and every person in the world, with no exceptions, is a flawed character but that should not diminish the extraordinary contributions that such people have made toward the progress and well-being of the nation and its people.

Please reconsider your earlier decision with respect to each of these Presidents... to instead honor their constructive contributions... and forgive their shortcomings.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours truly

Randall F. More, P. Eng.

verses from NASB (unless noted otherwise)

For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His personal possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. (Deuteronomy 7:6)

“For the sake of Jacob My servant, And Israel My chosen one, I have also called you by your name; I have given you a title of honor Though you have not known Me.” (Isaiah 45:4)

“I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you say, “How have You loved us?” “Was Esau not Jacob’s brother?” declares the LORD. “Yet I have loved Jacob; but I have hated Esau, and I have made his mountains a desolation and given his inheritance to the jackals of the wilderness.” (Malachi 1:2-3)

-------------------------

And if those days had not been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short… And He will send forth His angels with A GREAT TRUMPET BLAST, and THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other. (Matthew 4:22,31)

"Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.” (Matthew 24:22)

"And He will send forth His angels with A GREAT TRUMPET and THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.” (Matthew 24:31)

And if the Lord had not shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days… And then He will send forth the angels, and will gather together His elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of heaven. (Mark 13:20,27)

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God. (John 1:12-13)

“Everything that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I certainly will not cast out… No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” (John 6:37,44)

When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and all who had been appointed to eternal life believed. (Acts 13:48)

For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters… (Romans 8:29)

…and whom He predestined, these He also called; and whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified… Who will bring charges against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns?  (Romans 8:30,33-34)

…for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, it was said to her, “THE OLDER WILL SERVE THE YOUNGER.” Just as it is written: “JACOB I HAVE LOVED, BUT ESAU I HAVE HATED.” (Romans 9:11-13)

What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? Far from it!  For He says to Moses, “I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOMEVER I HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL SHOW COMPASSION TO WHOMEVER I SHOW COMPASSION.” So then, it does not depend on the person who wants it nor the one who runs, but on God who has mercy. (Romans 9:14-16)

In relation to the gospel they are enemies on your account, but in relation to God’s choice they are beloved on account of the fathers; for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. (Romans 11:28-29)

…our Lord Jesus Christ, who shall also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (I Corinthians 1:7-9

But it is due to Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written: “LET THE ONE WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.” (I Corinthians 1:30-31)

In love He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will… In Him we also have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things in accordance with the plan of His will… (Ephesians 1:5,11)

In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation - having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14)

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:4-7)

...He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:6)

So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience… (Colossians 3:12)

…constantly keeping in mind your work of faith and labor of love and perseverance of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father, knowing, brothers and sisters, beloved by God, His choice of you… (I Thessalonians 1:3-4)

But we should always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. (II Thessalonians 2:13)

For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory. (II Timothy 2:10)

Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago… (Titus 1:1-2)

…who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you. (I Peter 1:1-2)

But you are A CHOSEN PEOPLE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR GOD’S OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY. (I Peter 2:9-10)

Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choice of you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you. (II Peter 1:10-11)

Yogi-isms - compiled by Randall F. More

 YOGI-ISMS

Born Lawrence Peter Berra, Yogi Berra was a baseball legend. Yogi was born May 12, 1925 and died September 22, 2015.

Although only 5’-7” in height, he was one of the greatest catchers in MLB history. Berra was a three-time winner of the American League Most Valuable Player Award, won 10 World Championships as a player, and boasts 18 All-Star wins.

Berra was born in a family of Italian immigrants. He loved sports ever since he was a little boy and even though he had to drop out of school at the end of grade eight to help his family, he still found time to develop his talent as a baseball player.

The famous player was first called “Yogi” by a friend who told him that he sat like an Indian snake charmer after losing a game.

Yogi Berra was also widely known for his malapropisms with his comments on life and baseball known as “Yogi-isms.”

Following are Yogi Berra quotes that should make you laugh. Astonishingly, they all make perfect sense:

1.      “It ain’t over till it’s over.” (In July 1973, Berra’s Mets trailed the Chicago Cubs by 9-1/2 games in the National League East but rallied to clinch the division title and eventually reach the World Series.)

2.  “It’s deja vu all over again.” (referring to Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris when repeatedly hitting back-to-back home runs)
